Garmin Launches fleet 590, Connected PND for Telematics

Garmin last week expanded its portfolio of telematics solution with the addition of fleet 590, its first portable fleet tracking system, a 5-inch PND that integrates a black box (3G cellular modem), cable and antenna with Garmin’s user-interface.

The device can be easily transferred from vehicle to vehicle because it does not require a direct hard wiring to the vehicle, so there are no installation costs.

The fleet 590 detects driver behavior and allows supervisor to assess the driver’s driving habits and performance. Based on the embedded 3-axis accelerometer within the device, speeding, excessive braking, jack-rabbiting, and sharp turning can be logged. The threshold parameters can be adjusted. The fleet 590 also has an Engine Status Detection system that detacts and reports excessive engine idling.

The fleet 590 will be available for partner integration in the second quarter of 2013. Among other partners, fleet 590 will be launched in France with Orange Business Services; it will be connected to Orange Fleet Performance platform.
