Magellan Debuts SmartGPS Apps at Mobile World Congress

Magellan SmartGPS GPS apps for iOS and Android devices
There are a lot of good GPS and mapping apps available out there nowadays.  Given the pretty lame debut of Apple’s new non-Google mapping app, it would behoove you to educate yourself on the alternatives and, if you decide the Apple app isn’t for you, go for something else. Say, Magellan, who debuted SmartGPS apps for iOS and Android at Mobile World Congress.  (Most of the folks I work with who have iPhones use the Google app by default.  Which is as sad a commentary on the Apple app as I can think of.  But I digress.)
Magellan has been in the GPS and mapping biz for quite a while, as you probably know.  At the Mobile World Conference (MWC) now taking in place in Barcelona (attended by our own Judie!), they have demoed their latest SmartGPS GPS apps for both iOS and Android devices.  The apps are integrated with Yelp and Foursquare, and allow you to pull up “squares” that flip up to show reviews, tips, offers, and other info.  The info is stored in the cloud, so as to not clutter up your precious gizmo’s limited space.
So have you been looking for a good alternative to Apple maps, or whatever mapping application you are currently using to get you around town?  Check out the Magellan SmartGPS apps for iOS and Android, which will be available “in the sprint” (we don’t have price information for you; sorry about that).  And if you get it for yourself, be sure to let us know what you think below!

Sygic: GPS Navigation 13.1 BETA v1

Allow us to introduce the new Sygic GPS Navigation 13.1 BETA for Android!
We have added a lot of new features and we need you, our users, to help us with testing and improving things before the final release.

Here is a small FAQ to prevent any misunderstandings:

Can I use this 13.1 BETA application ?
New BETA app can be used by users with licensed Sygic: GPS Navigation app, or, for users with valid trial period.

What do I need to do to install this 13.1 BETA application ?
  1. You need to have Sygic: GPS Navigation app installed on your device from Google Play Store.
  2. sygicicon.png Download beta .apk installation file to your device.
  3. Make sure that option for installing apps from unknown sources (non-Market apps) is turned on, on your device. You can find it in Android Settings > Security > Unknown sources.
  4. If you do not have any file manager app installed, you can choose one from Google Play Store.
For example, you can use ES File Explorer File Manager or ASTRO File Manager
    .
  5. We recommend you to make a backup (copy) whole “Sygic” folder from your SD card/internal memory to prevent data loss (maps, favorites, custom POI etc.) in case of failure.
  6. Open file manager and search for .apk file that you have just downloaded from the link above, when you find it, install it.
  7. That’s all. Now open the new Sygic app from application menu of your device and wait until all resources files are downloaded.
(Please, use WiFi connection to do this, it is faster and saves you a lot of MB from your mobile data plan).

How can I move back to stable market version after BETA test ?
Just delete the whole “Sygic” folder from SD card/internal memory and install the original  Sygic” folder that you have backed-up.  After this, open Google Play Store and look for Sygic: GPS Navigation, uninstall and install it again (it will replace BETA .apk with stable .apk from Google Play Store).
This is all you need to do before using new BETA app, now we come to the main part.

We will really appreciate if you can test these features:

  1. Drag & Drop for simple route editing – In version 13.1, you are able to edit your route using Drag & Drop feature. It is pretty easy. When you already have any route from point A to point B computed, just tap and hold your finger at any point of your route and drag it to your desired position. Drop the flag and your route will be recalculated afterwards.
  2. Pedestrian mode with spoken instructions – From version 13.1, you can use spoken instruction for pedestrian mode as well.
  3. Sidebar for tablets – If you have an Android tablet, from now you can enjoy Sidebar that will show you a lot of useful information about your route.
  4. Off-road – Sometimes you just need to get off the known roads. In this case, our Off-road feature will leave  “bread crumbs” behind you. So, you will never have a problem with getting back on the road. Off-road will track your movement and help you get back the way you came from.
  5. Fix for Contacts on Android ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich) - From this version, there should be no problem with navigating to your contacts.

Please fill in following  web form after testing, so we can check all the problems that need to be fixed before final release.

Give us Feedback here!

Thank you very much for your time and help!

Sygic. We listen.

Η Google ανησυχεί για την κυριαρχία των Android συσκευών της Samsung

Η κορεατική εταιρία μπορεί να δημιουργήσει το δικό της OS
http://cdn-static.cnet.co.uk/i/c/blg/cat/mobiles/apple-vs-samsung-nexus.jpg

Garmin 4Q Revenue Hit by PND Market Decline

Garmin today posted weaker-than-expected revenue and profit in their fourth quarter and full year 2012 earnings. Revenue for Garmin’s automotive and mobile division - which encompasses its Personal Navigation Device business - fell 25%.

Garmin’s revenue for the full year 2012 declined 2% to $2.72 billion. In 2012 Garmin sold a total of 15.4 million units “with growth in outdoor, fitness, and automotive OEM, largely offsetting decliens in personal navigation devices.“       For 2013 Garmin’s executive team established their revenue guidance to $2.5 to $2.6 billion. They forecast that their growing revenue in the outdoor, fitness, marine and aviation segments are not going to be large enough to offset the expected declines in the PND market.

Automotive /Mobile segment
During the fourth quarter 2012 the automotive /Mobile segment revenue decreased 25% to $437 million. As explained by TomTom during their financial earnings last week , the U.S. PND market has lost its seasonality, i.e. in previous years the fourth quarter represented a large chunk of the year’s business.
 Outdoor Segment
the outdoor segment posted a slight revenue decline (2%) to $119 million in the fourth quarter but this compared to an exceptional 4Q/2011 when growth was 35%. For the full year the segment grew 11% and contributed $165 million of operating income.
  Fitness division
the fitness segment revenue increased 10% to $104 million in the fourth quarter 2012.

“Growth in the segment fell slightly short of our full year expectations due to product delays but strong fourth quarter results point to ongoing growth opportunities within the category (...). The Forerunner 10 was a popular holiday gift and we expect the momentum from that product to continue in 2013,“ added Garmin.
Aviation
Garmin’s aviation business decreased 2% in the fourth quarter to $70 million, but increased 2% on a full year basis ($292 million) contributing $73 million of full year operating income
Marine
In the marine business both the fourth quarter (down 9% to $39 million) to and the full year (down 6% to $208 million) have been tough for Garmin on a market that does not show signs of recovery in the short term.

Garmin however foresees a real opportunity on that market in the future: “We have continued to invest heavily in research and development for our marine segment causing a significant decline in operating margins and profits. New chartplotters, fishfinders and a marine focused watch are a result of this investment and shuold allow us to return to revenue growth in 2013.“

Garmin also indicated that the Board of Directors authorized the company to repurchase up to $300 milllion of the company’s shares. Garmin has indeed geenrated over $646 million of free cash flow in 2012, leading to a total balance of $2.9 billion.

Google Maps with Street View lands on the Wii U in the UK

Google Maps with Street View has now gone live on the Wii U. The app had previously been a Japan-only offering, but has now launched in North America and the UK.
Nintendo announced the app launch on its Nintendo Direct videocast, but only went into North American specifics.
The reason we know it runs in the UK is because we just downloaded it, so if you want to check if it runs on your Wii U and you are outside the US and UK, just fire up the eShop. If it is there, why not let us know in the comments.
The app uses static Street View imagery and lets you tilt and move the Wii U controller, augmented reality style, around the screen. But it's a bit of a way off from the 360-degree panorama videos that Nintendo demoed at E3. There was no word on when these would be arriving.
The impressive part of the app is just how fluid it runs. The motion control matches up really nicely with how much you move the Wii U controller about. Definitely one of the more fun ways to browse Street View.

iPhone 5 ranked fifth in user satisfaction, behind four Android powered devices

These are the findings from our latest device satisfaction study, where we asked 320,000 mobile and tablet users in six countries, including the US, UK, France, Germany, Japan and Indonesia, about how satisfied they were with their device.
The results were surprising, with the much anticipated iPhone 5 only ranking fifth in device satisfaction in a study of 93,825 US mobile users, behind four Android powered devices.
In fact US mobile users reported a higher satisfaction with their Motorola Atrix device (8.57), an Android powered device at a lower price point, than Apple iPhone 5 users (8.23).
 Device Sat US

Although Apple created one of the most revolutionary devices of the past decade, other manufactures have caught up, with some Android powered devices now commanding higher levels of user satisfaction.
The 4G effect
What’s really interesting is the 4G impact - the top 5 devices for satisfaction in the US are 4G capable devices, and users with a 4G subscription reported a higher device satisfaction (7.76) than those with no 4G subscription (7.28).
Device satisfaction also has an impact on network operator satisfaction, which also showed a positive increase (+0.48) amongst 4G subscribers. 4G users also have a higher monthly mobile bill.
UK and 4G
In contrast, in the UK where there is only one 4G network operator EE, the iPhone 5 is under less pressure from competitive devices, ranking second in user satisfaction.
However in the study of 52,140 UK mobile users, the HTC One X scores higher (8.47) than Apple’s iPhone 5 (8.21).

Device Sat UK
As 4G opens up to more UK cities in 2013, it will provide opportunities for both mobile network operators and handset manufacturers, to increase satisfaction, device usage and loyalty.

Garmin GLO™ Lets You Navigate with Your iPad® mini Wi-Fi

IPad Mini

One of the things that were popular with the crowd at Macworld/iWorld in San Francisco last week was our Garmin GLO GPS receiver. Both the iPad mini Wi-Fi and iPod Touch don't have a GPS receiver built in, so by pairing these devices with Garmin GLO via Bluetooth you'll be able to add this functionality. Just download our Garmin NAVIGON navigation app and you have a fully functional navigation system.
Garmin GLO
GLO is the first wireless GPS receiver with the ability to receive signals from both the United States’ GPS satellite network and Russia’s GLONASS satellite network. GLONASS provides access to 24 additional satellites than using GPS alone. This is particularly helpful for users who need reliable satellite navigation in challenging environments such as deep canyons or urban environments where a large portion of the sky is blocked by solid objects.
The great thing about the Garmin NAVIGON app is that it is optimized to run natively on the iPad, making use of the larger display and the user interface of the device. You can check out the picture above to see what the navigation screen looks like on the iPad mini. The app provides premium turn-by-turn navigation including onboard maps, lane guidance, speed limit warnings, real-time traffic and public transit routing, among many others.
