Telenav Acquires skobbler, the ‘Wikipedia of Maps’

skobbler_logoTelenav, Inc., announced today that it has acquired skobbler GmbH, the European-based navigation company with the highest rated OpenStreetMap (OSM)-based GPS navigation apps in the world. With this acquisition, Telenav brings the most successful OSM navigation experts in the world together as one team — including the founder of OSM, Steve Coast, who joined Telenav in 2013 — and becomes a major contributor to the creation of the open-sourced and most comprehensive map of the world, according to the announcement.
The acquisition closed on January 29 for consideration of approximately $19.2 million in cash and $4.6 million of company common stock.
“Crowdsourced OSM can power personalized navigation services like Scout — with highly detailed maps on a global scale,” said HP Jin, Telenav’s chairman and CEO. “We plan to offer Scout with OSM for much of the world. We have already made significant headway toward this goal in the U.S., including using OSM for our HTML5 version of Scout.”
OSM is the only crowdsourced and open-sourced map of the globe and, for many developers, it has become a clear alternative to Google Maps.
“Waze and Google — or, just Google now — provide similar mechanisms to improve their maps, based mostly on OSM’s innovations. With one big catch. It is very much their map. Not yours,” said Coast in his blog commentary today regarding the acquisition. “OpenStreetMap is different. All of the quality data contributed is openly available — just like Wikipedia. So, anyone can download, experiment and play with it freely. It’s not locked up beyond your reach.”
Since Coast founded OSM, the community has doubled year over year to more than 1.5 million registered editors, becoming a global community of local editors in every corner of the world. Its crowdsourced model publishes edits every minute on openstreetmap.org, resulting in maps that are detailed and up to date. For example, newly laid streets and newly developed areas can be updated on a regular basis and in real time. In addition, OSM allows for greater map detail for pedestrians such as alleys, sidewalks, parks, hiking trails, zoos, and even city trees.
Telenav has been an active contributor to OSM for more than three years, working closely with the community to enhance specific features needed for navigation, traffic and other future location-based services.
With offices in Germany and Romania, skobbler was the first company to launch a commercial navigation app using OSM (in 2010) for both Android and iOS devices and is available in app stores in 49 regions with worldwide map coverage. In order to do this, skobbler developed sophisticated algorithms that evolved OSM data from a display map to a navigable map.
skobbler’s apps are top ranked and highly rated in multiple countries including Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden. skobbler’s CEO, Peter Scheufen, previously served as the CEO of Navigon, which became a leading GPS device manufacturer in Europe and was eventually purchased by Garmin. The other skobbler founders also held senior roles at Navigon before founding skobbler. Telenav expects that all skobbler employees will join Telenav as part of its OSM team, bringing significant industry-leading software expertise in location-based services, navigation and mapping.
“By joining our efforts with skobbler, we will build on our combined successes to bring the best mapping and navigation services to our customers around the world,” said Jin. “The benefits of an open source model will provide an enormous opportunity to change the economic models of navigation and other location-based services.”
“OSM is currently one of the most active and dynamic crowdsourcing communities and is growing at an explosive rate,” said Scheufen. “Our team lives and breathes OSM and so we are excited to join forces with Telenav to create the largest, most sophisticated, and smartest OSM navigation team in the world.”
In connection with the acquisition and in accordance with NASDAQ Marketplace Rule 5635(c), Telenav granted four employees of skobbler and its subsidiaries, upon the closing of the acquisition, restricted stock units for an aggregate of 634,920 shares of common stock.
These RSUs were granted outside of the existing Telenav stock plans and without stockholder approval pursuant to NASDAQ Marketplace Rule 5635(c)(4) with the following terms: each RSU vests as to 50% of the award on the anniversary of Acquisition and as to 50% of the award on the second anniversary of the Acquisition, subject to continued employment through each relevant date.

Fake iGO Navigation Cleaned from Biggest Russian Torrent Tracker

NNG, developer of the leading iGO Navigation software, reports success in anti-piracy fight

NNG’s cooperation with “Vlasta Consulting”, the company’s official anti-piracy partner in Russia since the end of 2012, has generated significant results. During this time, “Vlasta Consulting” has tracked more than 10,000 Russian links which offer downloads of hacked iGO Navigation software. 8,100 have successfully been removed, with the remaining ones in progress toward closure. Russia’s largest torrent tracker was completely cleaned of links to pirated versions of NNG’s software. The second largest torrent website is cooperating with “Vlasta Consulting” to clear the page of any iGO Navigation downloads.
David Wiernik, President, NNG“The fight against software piracy takes high priority on our list of actions in Russia,” says David Wiernik, President of NNG LLC. “Our goal is to stop everyone who capitalizes on our technology and damages our reputation. We take violators to court, and have so far won all cases.”
22 online stores offering installation services of unauthorized iGO Navigation copies have been identified, 6 of which are already closed. As part of NNG’s national anti-piracy campaign, more than 1,000 retail outlets have been checked. Information about those that sell pirated iGO Navigation software was transferred to law enforcement authorities. In cooperation with the police, the agency “Vlasta Consulting” has held 5 raids.
“From what we see, the PND segment is the worst affected in Russia. Personal navigation devices account for 99% of all detected counterfeit of iGO Navigation products,” said Vladimir Solomanidin, General Director at Vlasta-Consulting LLC. “The most popular iGO Navigation product among pirates is iGO primo. Our cooperation with the local police is constantly improving; we provide them with  relevant information and train them how to identify pirated software.”
The distribution of fake software weakens not only the business of rightful brand owners but also that of consumers. No matter if they use hacked software deliberately or accidentally, the results are: facing crashes, missing the latest features and functionalities, suffering from unreliable output or products that don’t work at all – all of them significantly harm the reputation of the brand. NNG is committed to providing customers with maximum comfort and safety on the road, and continues to invest in the fight against navigation software piracy. While the company provides navigation solutions for nearly 140 countries, it collaborates with law enforcement agencies, governmental organizations and custom controls in many countries.
NNG plans to further strengthen its position in the Russian navigation market in 2014 through fruitful business cooperations; simultaneously, it will continue the fight against the illegal distribution of its products.

Detroit: Continental and HERE Partner for Automated Driving

Today at the Detroit Motor Show, Continental and HERE announced that their teams will intensify their collaboration, with a particular focus on Electronic Horizon and Automated Driving functionalities.

The work is said to begin with the development of a highly precise map database for Continental's Electronic Horizon platform that will enable vehicles to continuously determine their position on the road to within 10-20 centimeters (3-8 inches).
The maps will include a range of road information, including lane markings and connectivity, speed limit changes, no passing signs and more. Using this information, future vehicles will be able to react to shifting circumstances, such as changing speed limits, automatically.
Continental aims to provide a complete end-to-end connected Electronic Horizon solution based on HERE data and cloud services to vehicle manufacturers worldwide.

Down the road the solution is expected to become the basis for Highly Automated Driving functionality that Continental targets to have in vehicles rolling off assembly lines by 2020.

With more than 26 million telematics units produced worldwide, Continental is already providing the necessary systems for connected vehicles.

Garmin® Introduces GPSMAP® 64 Series Updating the Popular High Performance Outdoor Handheld

Schaffhausen, Switzerland. January 13, 2014/Business Wire—Garmin International Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ: GRMN), the global leader in satellite navigation, today announced the GPSMAP 64 series of rugged outdoor handhelds. GPSMAP64s_HR_747.OSThe GPSMAP 64 series brings high-end positioning with a quad helix antenna and a dual GPS/ GLONASS receiver, outdoor optimised brilliant display, dual battery system and smartphone connectivity for LiveTrack and Smart Notification to a product line already popular with mountaineers, geocachers and outdoor adventurers of all ages.
“Building on the popularity of the GPSMAP series, the new GPSMAP 64 improves functionality to make a top-notch device even better, said Martin Resch, Product Manager Outdoor EMEA. “The GPSMAP 64 is ideal for demanding outdoor enthusiasts, no matter if it’s their first GPS handheld, or if Garmin has already become an essential part of their outdoor gear. Now the GPSMAP 64 combines trusted Garmin technology with the comfort of a connected device people know and love.”
The GPSMAP 64 series features a high-sensitivity GPS and GLONASS receiver with a quad helix antenna for superior reception. With the addition of GLONASS satellites, the time it takes for the receiver to “lock on” to a position is (on average) approximately 20 percent faster than using GPS alone. This allows users to get their position quickly and precisely even in heavy cover and deep canyon.
The GPSMAP 64 series features three distinct, truly rugged and water-resistant (IPX7) models to suit various activities and interests. The basic GPSMAP 64 comes with great positioning performance and a brilliant 2.6-inch sunlight-readable transflective colour display and a button based user interface. Its increased internal memory (4 GB) is now also expandable through a micro SD card slot. It supports various kinds of high quality Garmin maps. The GPSMAP 64s adds advanced sensors - barometric altimeter and 3-axis electronic compass - for further, improved situational awareness. In addition, the GPSMAP 64s features wireless connectivity for data transfer between other compatible Garmin handhelds and mobile apps, and for Smart Notification technology. With this, users can receive emails, texts and alerts right on the device (when paired with an iPhone 4S and later). This allows users to stay connected via their smartphone while keeping it safely protected from the elements. The GPSMAP 64s also comes with a one-year, free of charge, subscription of BirdsEye Satellite Imagery. In addition to these key features, the GPSMAP 64st comes preloaded with a Recreational Map for Europe. With this, users will be able to search for points of interest by name or proximity to their location and view descriptive details for vegetation, path networks and terrain contours. GPSMAP64_HR_730.5
All of the devices in the GPSMAP 64 series have an outdoor optimised dual-battery system, where both standard AA batteries and a rechargeable NiMH battery pack (sold separately) can be used. Plus, all of the GPSMAP 64 devices have internal memory (4GB for 64/64s and 8GB for 64st), and a microSD card slot to store additional data and maps.
The rugged GPSMAP 64s and 64st models are compatible with the BaseCamp mobile app for data transfer, and the Garmin Connect™ mobile app, for features such as LiveTrack. With LiveTrack users can pair their device with the app, and invite friends and family to follow their activity in real time. This provides peace of mind, especially if users are out there alone. Through ANT+™, the GPSMAP 64s and 64st models are also compatible with optional external sensors such as tempe™, the wireless temperature sensor, cadence sensor or a heart rate monitor. Additionally with ANT+, the GPSMAP 64s and GPSMAP 64st models can act as a remote control for the new VIRB™ and VIRB Elite action cameras. All GPSMAP 64 series are perfect companions for the demanding outdoor adventurer. The devices are compatible with BaseCamp™, a free software download that allows users to plan their outdoor adventures and prepare their waypoints and tracks using optional, Garmin quality maps.
The GPSMAP 64 series makes paperless geocaching easier than ever. Each device comes preloaded with the locations of 250,000 geocaches from Geocaching.com. Devices store and display key information to find the cleverly hidden containers including the geocache coordinates, terrain rating, its difficulty, hints and descriptions, so users no longer have to manually enter coordinates or print out geocache info. If users would like to continue geocaching beyond the preloaded geocaches, they can sign up for the free premium membership trial through Geocaching.com once registering their device on mygarmin.com. In addition to the preloaded geocaches, the GPSMAP 64 devices can store millions more.
The new GPSMAP 64 series will be available in February 2014. The GPSMAP 64 will retail from £269.99, the GPSMAP 64s will retail from £359.99, and the GPSMAP 64st will retail for £419.99. Various mapping options will be available including preloaded TOPO UK & Ireland Light map in addition to the ever popular Garmin GB Discoverer 1:50K bundles which includes the Ordnance Survey Landranger map for the whole of Great Britain.
The GPSMAP 64 series is the latest solution from Garmin’s growing outdoor segment, which focuses on developing technologies and innovations to enhance users’ outdoor experiences. Whether it’s Golfing, Hiking, Mountaineering or Geocaching, Garmin outdoor devices are becoming essential tools for outdoor enthusiast of all levels.

2014 Garmin nuvis include 5, 6, 7″ models, backup camera and lower prices

7 inch Garmin nüvi 2798LMT with wireless backup camera
The 7″ Garmin nuvi 2798LMT comes with a wireless backup camera
UPDATE: I’ve added links to the product pages on Garmin’s website.
Garmin has announced their 2014 nuvi Essential series, featuring 5″ and 6″ models, a 7″ nuvi 2798LMT with a wireless backup camera, and lower prices.
If the images above and below look familiar, they should. They look just like the 2013 Essential series. Instead of new features, Garmin appears to be focusing on lower prices, a new 6″ model line, and wireless backup camera compatibility.

2014 Essential series bring 5″ & 6″ screens, lower prices

The 5″ and 6″ models are part of the Essential series line which features…
…premium functionalities that were previously only available in the Advanced Series. New to the Essential Series are lifetime traffic avoidance on select models, School Zone Warnings, a quick search field to easily find addresses and points of interest (POIs), and Up Ahead, a feature that shows a continuous stream of points of interest next to the map view.
List prices will range from $129.99 to $209.99.
    Garmin 2014 nüvi Essential Series
The 2014 Garmin nüvi Essential Series
Here’s the model breakdown (LM models offer lifetime maps; LMT models offer lifetime traffic and maps):
    Model Screen size Maps MSRP
     nuvi 55 5″  49 states  $129.99
     nuvi 55LM 5″  49 states  $159.99
     nuvi 55LMT 5″  49 states  $179.99
     nuvi 56 5″  US+Canada  $139.99
     nuvi 56LM 5″  US+Canada  $169.99
     nuvi 56LMT 5″  US+Canada  $189.99
     nuvi 65LM 6″  49 states  $179.99
     nuvi 65LMT 6″  49 states  $199.99
     nuvi 66LM 6″  US+Canada  $189.99
     nuvi 66LMT 6″  US+Canada  $209.99
The 2014 Essential series feature set appears similar to the 2013 Advanced series, but we don’t know yet if there will be models that include voice command, active lane guidance, etc. But the 2798LMT does have them…

7″ nuvi 2798LMT features wireless backup camera and advanced features

The 7″ nuvi 2798LMT will include advanced features such as voice command, Garmin Real Directions and active lane guidance. Regarding the BC20 wireless backup camera, Garmin says it…
…is rugged enough to withstand even the harshest of weather and can be mounted on the rear of the vehicle (professional installation recommended). If the camera is wired to the reverse lights for power, the navigator can automatically display the live camera feed every time the vehicle is shifted into reverse (and back to navigation mode when shifted into a forward gear.). A simple button press will toggle between camera and navigation modes if the camera is plugged into constant power.
    The MSRP is $399.99.

    Coming in February

All the new models are expected to be available next month. I’ll update this post with more details as the become available.

    Magellan announces Android-based PND

    Android-based Magellan RoadMate 5430T-LM
    Magellan’s new Android-based RoadMate 5430T-LM
Magellan has announced their first Android-based personal navigation device (PND), the 5″ Magellan RoadMate 5430T-LM. Previous RoadMates have used Windows CE as the underlying operating system.
There’s not a lot of detail in the news release, short of pointing out that it will have a capacitive screen, unusual for a relatively low cost unit; the 5430T-LM carries a list price of $179.99.
I’d be surprised if you see standard Android apps like Gmail on it, or access to Google Play for other apps. If that was the case, they’d probably be making a bigger deal out of it, billing it as a hybrid PND/mini-tablet. No, I’m betting this is just Magellan dipping their toes into the Android waters, getting some experience with it. Next year’s introductions could prove more interesting.
The RoadMate 5430T-LM is due to hit retailers this quarter.

Magellan Intros PND With Integrated Dashcam

Magellan Intros PND With Integrated Dashcam
GPS maker Magellan has demonstrated ath the CES trade show a RoadMate Personal Navigation Device (PND) with an integrated dashcam.

"Our new RoadMate PND with dashcam not only gets drivers to their destination, it also provides recorded evidence of the drive," said Stig Pedersen, associate vice president product management Magellan. "The PND portion of the unit is loaded with well-known Magellan features, such as landmark guidance, PhantomALERT, junction view, and free lifetime traffic and map updates. At the same time, its dashcam will record traffic events to provide a video record that helps prevent confusion in an accident."

The camera features 120-degree wide-angle viewing for a detailed look at the road. A G-Sensor detects and records any sudden motion or speed changes. As soon as any sharp braking, rapid acceleration, excessive cornering, or sudden impact occurs, the dashcam's DVR kicks in, recording what is taking place.

The device will be available in the United States in April 2014 at a retail price of $229.99.

INRIX XD CONNECT MAKES MOBILE APPS EASIER TO USE IN THE CAR

Bosch SoftTec, Jaguar Land Rover and Pioneer to Showcase INRIX XD Connect with the INRIX Traffic App at CES
Las Vegas – 2014 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) – January 6, 2014 – INRIX®, a leading international provider of traffic information and driver services, introduced a set of technologies that makes it safer and easier to use a mobile app in the car.

INRIX XD Connect helps automotive suppliers and OEMs better integrate a mobile app with the vehicle so consumers can access information and interact with mobile apps in a driver-friendly context.

“Drivers juggling smartphone apps inside a car pose obvious risks to their safety and others on the road,” said INRIX Vice President of Mobile, Mike Arcuri. “XD Connect helps reduce risk of driver distraction, allowing consumers to keep their hands on the wheel, eyes on the road and not on the phone.”

XD Connect is a breakthrough technology designed to help automakers and their suppliers comply with the National Highway and Transportation Administration’s (NHTSA) driver distraction guidelines.

Benefits of XD Connect include the ability to:

    • Assign app functions to steering wheel controls or buttons on the dash for ease of use
    • Optimize font and button sizes, in-app icons and app displays for in-car use
    • Disable specific app functions and customize interaction to minimize driver distraction
    • Integrate apps with the vehicle’s voice recognition and text-to-speech software
    • Customize app interfaces to match the look and feel of each in-car system or aftermarket device

Mobile and automotive companies requiring traffic-enabled in-car app experiences can leverage the new head-unit-optimized HMI and connectivity protocols built into XD Connect. INRIX XD Connect will be showcased at CES with the INRIX Traffic app on Pioneer’s AppRadio 3 and Bosch SoftTec’s mySPIN smartphone integration for Jaguar Land Rover’s new InControl Apps service.

Garmin® Showcases new Infotainment Technology for Automakers

    OEM HUD High-Res
Today we announced a range of new infotainment technologies for automakers at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2014. Designed to minimize distractions behind the wheel, Garmin will present an interactive head-up display (HUD) interface as well as new developments of its K2 infotainment platform to selected industry members and the press in a private meeting room.
“Garmin’s auto OEM group utilizes the company’s extensive experience in user interface and hardware design to address one of the biggest challenges of the auto industry today: developing in-car infotainment that allows drivers to stay connected behind the wheel without diverting their attention from the road,” said Matt Munn, Garmin managing director automotive OEM. “Garmin’s K2 infotainment platform and interactive HUD interface have been developed utilizing an in-house driving simulator that uses cameras to track the driver’s eye movements. The interface design is based on the time and cognitive load required to perform a task with the goal of minimizing driver distraction.”
The interactive HUD concept provides a glimpse at how an automotive HUD interface designed by Garmin can help keep the driver’s hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. Balancing functionality with simplicity, the interface includes a passive state and an interactive mode. The passive state presents customizable audio, navigation or communication content just below the driver’s line of sight. A simple and clean interface provides important information quickly and at a glance. The navigation view, for example, can show information such as junction views, lane guidance, speed limit and safety warnings.
The innovative proximity sensor on the steering wheel activates an interactive mode on the HUD that allows users to switch between the different pages. Two steering wheel buttons let users select in-menu options, such as start a route, view traffic information, change a radio station or initiate a phone call. Users can save presets in each menu for quick access while on the road and eyes facing straight ahead. The audio menu, for example, could contain saved radio stations, playlists and songs.
