Nokia Drive σε όλα τα κινητά με Windows Phone

Nokia Drive GPS σε όλα τα κινητά με Windows Phone

OnTheBus (android smartphones)

Navigon for Android updated, hits Samsung Apps (Australia)

Garmin’s smartphone navigation app, Navigon, has received a significant update, and is now available on Samsung Apps store for select Galaxy devices as part of a new update for Android 4.1.
Samsung Apps is a marketplace designed to bring users apps that are optimised for Samsung devices.
“With Navigon for Android 4.1, we enhance the usability of our navigation solution for select Galaxy smartphones and tablets, making it easy for Samsung users to access and manage the app via Samsung Apps,” Garmin Australasia mobile business director, Harry Gasiamis, said.
Samsung partnership aside, the updated Navigon app features Active Lane Assistant, audio output via Bluetooth, a widget for quick access to favourite destinations, and the introduction of timed coded alerts for school zones.
Active Lane Assist offers live lane animation to guide drivers to appropriate lanes. The feature is displayed in the bottom right-hand corner of the map view, with a coloured arrow directing the driver.
The app’s widget gives users the ability to access certain features without first opening the app. This includes navigating to one of the last 20 inputted destinations, for example.
Additionally, Navigon’s TrafficCheck feature provides an overview of latest traffic conditions based on the calculated route. It reports hazards and construction through a red, yellow and green meter reflects the extent of the calculated delay.
Although Navigon for Android is pre-installed with an array of functions on select Galaxy devices, premium services must be added via in-app purchases.

Generation Smartphone heads for the mountains: Maps 3D feature offensive

Hamburg, DE May 24, 2012 in Navigation
[prMac.com] Wurzburg, Germany - Smartphones and social media are nowadays revolutionizing people's communication behavior and their everyday lives. With the smartphone, for the first time GPS receivers are finding their way into people's pockets and are changing the way they orient themselves, how they plan and go about their outdoor activities for the weekend or for longer vacation tours, and how they ultimately share these experiences with friends. Among smartphone users, the classic city or hiking map in 2D is thus usually left at home in favor of a more favorable app.

Just in time for the outdoor season, Maps 3D comes up with an update. Ranked as the bestselling outdoor app for months on the iPhone in Germany, Italy, Austria and other European countries, Maps 3D is kicking off a feature offensive with numerous intelligent and innovative enhancements: ReverseTrack, intermediate destination and a comprehensive trip export function. With the latter, users can post their recorded routes along with waypoints and photos with a simple tap of a finger, email them, twitter them or share them with friends on their Facebook wall. A link in the email or from the wall takes those interested to the route, which can then be displayed either in Google Maps or Google Earth, as they wish. The photos taken along the route can be displayed by clicking on them.

New feature: Follow tracks in both directions

The movingworld team developed the ideas for ReverseTrack and intermediate destinations as part of a weeks-long hiking and programming retreat in the mountains. With ReverseTrack, walkers, hikers, bicyclists or horseback riders can follow downloaded tracks in both directions - an extremely useful function that no other outdoor tool provides. "You can almost always take a route in two directions - so it's been annoying up till now when the route found ran in the opposite direction to your own," said movingworld's CEO Moritz Gaupp getting to the heart of the solved problem. Only Maps 3D now displays the stretch of the route behind you in addition to the meters of altitude to go - and what's more, in both directions.

New feature: Simplifying orientation with intermediate destination

With the intermediate destination function, movingworld is showing a new approach to simplifying orientation in the field - especially when there's no ready-made tour available. As before, you can set a destination which is led to by a line. The distance to it is always precisely calculated. Now an intermediate destination can be set over which the line is redirected to the destination. Thus, distance and direction to the intermediate destination are always available without losing view of the overall destination. Both destinations are visualized in the compass. "Thinking in waypoints is much closer to the real needs of day-trippers: you want to know how far it is to the next museum, the next apple spritzer in the bicyclist restaurant or to the peak, and in what direction you've got to keep going," says Gaupp about the advantages.

The technical hurdles have been lowered for everyday people

When the smartphone generation plans, they look at the destination region in advance on Google Earth, click their trip together or download a ready-made trip from one of the many free portals. "Lots of users upload their own trips and make them available to other users," explains Gaupp, adding, "Not too long ago this was just for techie nerds, but now completely new communities are growing around this. The technical hurdles have been significantly lowered, so that everyday people can find their way around the portals."

Mass compatibility due to worldwide standards and intuitive 3D-view

Something that's important for mainstreaming is the worldwide standard for trip imports: the files end in ".gpx" in which the trails are stored precisely. This allows anyone today to grab almost any route in the world, online and for free - from a sightseeing city tour of Berlin to a crossing of the Alps on foot to a ski tour in the US. With Maps 3D as the market leader among iPhone outdoor apps, there's an additional unique function that traditional paper maps can't offer: an interactive 3D view. For this, movingworld uses satellite data from NASA and developed an exact 3D model from NASA's terrain scans of the whole earth. The practical benefit: "Instead of having to tediously interpret contour lines on a paper map or a traditional GPS device, your own path is revealed - right into the mountains - three-dimensionally and thus significantly more intuitive," says Gaupp. In less than a year, Maps 3D has been able to win over 300,000 iPhone owners, 100,000 of which are in Germany alone. And the download figures in the last six months have once again markedly picked up speed.

600.000 volunteers contributes to the "Wikipedia of maps"

At least as important for the mass compatibility of map apps is the availability of free, high-quality digital map data. The OpenStreetMap (OSM), a kind of Wikipedia for maps which 600,000 volunteers around the world contribute to, is currently bringing about the breakthrough. "With the advent of GPS-enabled smartphones, the days of obscenely expensive GPS tools for pros are gone. From a quality standpoint, Maps 3D is the equal of traditional GPS hardware costing several hundreds of Dollars," says Gaupp. To keep the hurdles to entry low, Maps 3D can also be used with an iPod touch or a Bluetooth GPS.

Thanks to GPS-enabled smartphones, getting lost is rapidly becoming a thing of the past. As you move, a blue cursor on the display within Maps 3D always shows where you are. Even if you're only a few meters off the track or fog has limited your view, in the future, the smartphone will show you the altitude you need to reach and the rest of the path ahead of you. At the destination of the trip, all data can be reviewed and shared: distance and altitude, speed and miles covered.

About Maps 3D:
Since the launch of the iPhone app Maps 3D last year, Maps 3D has reached the top 5 ranking in the navigation category in apps stores in over 30 countries. In Germany it has leveled off between second and fifth place in the same category and now has over 300,000 users worldwide. Maps 3D is the comprehensive tool for planning, navigating, plotting and sharing of trips. When planning a trip at home, the outdoor fan first select the region of his/her choice at one of three zoom levels and downloads the data to their iPhone. Then with a few taps, the user transfers free trips either from the trip portal of his/her choice such as Everytrail, or from other sources.

In the planning phase as well as later in the field, Maps 3D helps with an intuitively graspable compass-oriented 3D map, which correctly assesses the difficulty of the trail and maintains an overview. Maps 3D displays various natural reference points along the way, such as mountains, lakes, rivers and other landmarks to make orientation even easier for the user. Selectable intermediate destinations, so-called waypoints, can be imported or created from scratch during the preparation stage. A compass and a direct connection between standpoint, intermediate destination and final destination help with orientation in the open field. Geocachers will appreciate the option of being guided to a fixed set of coordinates.

Maps 3D at a glance:
* Worldwide 2D and 3D maps in offline mode
* GPS orientation for all outdoor activities - hiking, cycling tours, horseback riding, skiing
* Track recorder with real altitude data

The man behind the development of Maps 3D is Moritz Gaupp, a former feature product manager at Garmin/Navigon, where he was responsible for the successful navigation system's map display until 2011. "We believe that users want solutions for better orientation outside of the car, particularly on their smartphones. This applies especially to all those who enjoy exploring the great outdoors. We want to drive this area forward with our app development centre, movingworld", says Moritz Gaupp, movingworld founder and head developer. Copyright (C) 2012 Moritz Gaupp. All Rights Reserved. How Garmin Failed to See the iPhone Threat

About nine years ago, I had a question for Min Kao, the CEO of the GPS concern Garmin. His answer was determined, and I thought of it yesterday as I watched the news from Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference unfold.
In the summer of 2003, I was at Garmin’s headquarters in Olathe, Kansas, outside Kansas City, working on a profile of Garmin for Forbes Magazine. The GPS business was just warming up. Garmin was on the rise, and its two founders — Kao and the company’s first CEO Gary Burrell — were flirting with membership on the Forbes list of global billionaires.

GPS functionality appeared to be headed toward increasingly functional mobile phones, I said. GPS chipsets were getting ever cheaper and increasingly easy to integrate into other devices, while mobile phones were constantly doing more. Kao was unconcerned. Mobile phones were, in his judgement, “the kind of commodity business we would like to avoid.”

At the time, it wasn’t necessarily the wrong answer. The leading mobile phone companies were Nokia and Motorola. It was four years before the iPhone, though speculative rumors of an Apple-made phone were already in the air. Google was still a private company focused on search.

At the time, Garmin was focused on the launch of its first GPS-enabled PDA, the iQue 3600. The company had taken out a license for the Palm operating system and had written an application that mimicked what was, for the time, its top-of-the-line, dashboard-mounted in-car navigation device. The iQue even had voices that said “turn right” or “turn left,” which were still a novelty.

Later, back in New York, I pressed Kao again with follow-up questions via email. I laid out an even stronger case that the mobile phone represented a long-term threat to his businesses. He was unswayed. Phones were a low-margin commodity market, and phone manufacturers could never obtain the expertise in mapping and navigation that Garmin had worked so hard to create.

I was sincerely surprised at how readily an engineer as smart and visionary as Kao could dismiss the apparent trajectory that mobile phones were so clearly already on by 2003. Moore’s law, I reasoned, applied just as much to phones as it did to traditional computers. Just a few years would yield huge advances in processing power even on the smaller processors put in phones, thus giving them the ability to do much more than they could today.

And Kao wasn’t exactly lacking in the vision department. In the 1980s, he and Burrell had quit good jobs at the Allied Aerospace company (later AlliedSignal, now part of Honeywell) because they saw commercial potential in what was then the incomplete constellation of satellites that would later become known as the Global Positioning System. Initially intended for military use, by 2001 the civilian flavor of the technology was sufficiently accurate that common motorists could rely upon it and thus run out of excuses for getting lost on the road.

In broad brushstrokes, we all know how it turned out. Personal navigation devices did indeed turn out to be a big hit with consumers around the world. But, in parallel, phones got better, and Apple and Google both decided to play in the marketplace. Sensing a strategic opportunity in navigation, Finland’s Nokia acquired Navteq, a mapping data provider, in 2007; in 2008, navigation player TomTom acquired the other one, TeleAtlas, though only after a brief bidding war with Garmin.

In 2009, Garmin tried to build its own Android-based phones, but the whole idea just didn’t work out.

Fast forward to mid-2012 and yesterday’s demonstration of new mapping and navigation capabilities on Apple’s iOS 6. Garmin isn’t a nonparticipant in the smartphone ecosystem: It builds many iPhone and Android apps for navigation, boating, aviation and outdoor sports.

And, indeed, half of Garmin’s business is in those non-automotive areas. But it’s about to get killed in the half that everyone pays attention to: Automotive navigation. Some people will still choose to rely on a dedicated navigation system. But more often than not, they’ll buy one preinstalled in their car that doesn’t come from Garmin. And if, like me, they don’t own a car, they’ll use their phone to handle navigation when they rent one.

Today, TomTom — the rival that has for several years competed heavily with Garmin, particularly in the retail-navigation system space — confirmed that it had reached some kind of mapping-data licensing agreement with Apple, but said that it would provide no further details on the conditions of the deal.

Yesterday, Garmin shares fell 8.5 percent to close at $38.20. TomTom shares rose more than 11 percent today in Amsterdam, trading on word of its relationship with Apple. Seeing these results, it’s hard not to think back to that interview with the Garmin CEO almost a decade ago, and to consider it as having been a pretty important question.

Competitors react to announcement of Apple nav app in iOS 6

I wasn't sure if any competitors to Apple in the nav space were going to react to Apple offering free turn-by-turn directions in iOS 6, but I did get some interesting comments from the folks at Garmin/Navigon.
Johan-Till Broer at Garmin International shared this statement from Garmin today:
"We've been competing successfully with free navigation on Android phones, and through third party apps also on the iPhone, for a couple of years now, and it has been widely anticipated that Apple would introduce a new maps app with navigation functionalities. It is, however, too early to provide a qualified evaluation of this new iOS feature. Garmin has over 20 years of experience in navigation technology and our navigation products offer a wide range of unique features that provide drivers highly accurate and reliable road guidance."
"We think that there is a market for smartphone navigation apps, PND's (personal navigation devices) and in-dash navigation systems as each of these solutions has their own advantages and use case limitations and ultimately it's up to the consumer to decide what they prefer. We will take a look at Apple's new app and will continue to innovate in the navigation app, PND and auto OEM space to offer our customers a premium navigation experience that goes beyond the capabilities available from free smartphone services."
Fair enough. Competing with free is quite a challenge, but I hope Apple's announcement will force competitors to attain new heights in features and new lows in pricing. All consumers will benefit from that.

.....Apple unveiled its custom Maps application yesterday that will debut with iOS 6 when the update launches this Fall. Rumors in the past indicated that Apple would be building up its own mapping system based on the acquisition of several mapping companies, including C3 Technologies. Cupertino has also made use of OpenStreetMap in the past in Photos for iOS, but what about the new Maps? TomTom has now confirmed that Apple has licensed its maps, along with other content.......

Apple Partners with 9 Car Makers to Bring a “Siri“ Button on the Steering Wheel

In a keynote speech today at the Apple Worldwide Developer conference, Scott Forstall, senior vice president of iOS Software announced that Siri, the voice recognition-based iOS assistant, will get its own button on the steering wheel of nine carmakers.

BMW, GM, Mercedes, Land Rover, Jaguar, Audi, Toyota, Chrysler and Honda are part of this development called “Eyes Free“.

On a single press on a steering wheel button Siri will be activated on the iPhone - probably via Bluetooth and ready to answer your questions.

What is interesting here is that Siri on iOS 6 has learned new tricks. Now It can open apps as well as launch a destination on the turn-by-turn navigation software freshly announced by Apple.

No date of availability in specific car has been announced at this stage, but it is interesting to see that Apple has its own agenda when it comes to the connected car.

Will Apple Pull the Plug on Garmin?

On Monday, Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) highly awaited annual Worldwide Developers Conference finally rolled out. Anticipation has been building for months that the tech giant will update its Mac product line, provide more information on Mountain Lion or even announce improvements to Siri. The Apple Store is currently closed with a message that simply says, “We’re busy updating the Apple Store for you and will be back soon.” However, another new development by Apple could spread its dominance further into the tech world.
Although Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) Maps is currently preloaded by Apple onto its iPhones and iPads, Apple has been clear that it intends to launch its own mapping feature to replace Google’s service. Apple is predicted to be doing away with the Google map program in the next version of its mobile operating system to be launched later this year with an in-house one. The company has also reportedly acquired a firm to use aerial spy technology to provide highly detailed maps. MailOnline reports, “Apple’s military-grade cameras are understood to be so powerful they could potentially see into homes through skylights and windows. The technology is similar to that used by intelligence agencies in identifying terrorist targets in Afghanistan.”
Don’t Miss: Meet OS X Mountain Lion
Even though the technology is likely to raise more privacy concerns, consumers are often willing to select convenience and coolness over privacy. With Apple’s own in-house map program, millions of people will have easy access to the program on the company’s many devices. In addition to Google, Apple’s map program will likely have an effect on Microsoft’s (NASDAQ:MSFT) Bing Maps and Nokia’s (NYSE:NOK) Drive. But, perhaps Apple will steal enough market share to drive the final stake through one technology company.
Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ:GRMN) designs, develops and markets a diverse line of global positioning system units. Their products include handheld portable and fixed-mount products for the auto, outdoor and marine industry. Unfortunately, these are all places that people often take their Apple products with them, because iFans take their iGadgets everywhere. This morning, Oppenheimer explained that although it believes Garmin is executing well, an update by Apple that includes turn-by-turn navigation to iOS, could add even more problems for personal navigation device makers. We live in a world where smartphones and tablets are quickly replacing older technology such as GPS devices.
Shares of Garmin dropped 8.5 percent on Monday. Since hitting an all-time high near $120 in 2007, shares of the company have plunged more than 60 percent as mobile devices by companies such as Apple and Samsung become the new normal across the globe.
